Injuries in Runners – Article Review

Here are some interesting findings from a recent article (which can be found on google scholar for free) about the prevalence of injuries in runners and possible gender specific differences.

Seemingly there is no significant difference between how often female v male runners get injured, but there is a difference in the prevalence of the type of those injuries. Notable injuries being bone stress injuries (of which women had a higher injury rate) and achilles tendon injuries (of which men had a higher injury rate).

But what does this tell us? Well, it may mean that there are factors (gender being one, and certainly not the only one) which predispose us to different injury types. We should therefore consider sex specific aspects such as hormonal changes and biomechanical characteristics when assessing and treating each individual.
